Anatomy Workshop Descriptions:

Day 1

The Lower Body: The Feet, Knees and Hips

What challenges do we face remaining upright on two legs--and sometimes one--in standing asanas? How do joints allow movement while maintaining stability? Topics will include: the foot, ankle, knee and hip joints, including some of the muscles that cross them; how bones, connective tissues and muscles support us in gravity; synovial joints, and how to keep the knee and other joints safe in asana.

Day 2

The Upper Body: The Spine, Trunk and Arms

How do we support the upper body while still moving with ease? How do we use our arms and hands--better suited for mobility than stability--to bear weight? Topics will include: the structure of the spine; how the curves of the spine and the shapes of the vertebrae influence how we move; bones and muscles of the shoulder girdle; how healthy alignment helps keep shoulders safe.

Joe Miller began practicing yoga in the mid 1980's. He completed teacher training with Cyndi Lee and Jennifer Brilliant at OM Yoga in 2000. He has taught at OM since then, and is a member of the Teacher Training Faculty. He is currently a member of the OM Yoga Teacher Training Faculty. In addition to Cyndi, he has practiced with K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore, India, and, in New York, with Eddie Stern and Genny Kapuler. Joe has a longstanding interest in anatomy, sparked initially by studies of artistic anatomy. In 2004 he graduated from Leslie Kaminoff's yoga anatomy course and participated in the dissection of several cadavers. He studies Sanskrit with Manorama, and has also studied meditation in the Shambhala tradition.  He is currently working on his master’s degree in applied physiology through Columbia University.
