Join Maria Rosa Menocal for an in-depth tour of the Union Square Farmers Market and decide what looks best for a farm-based class & lunch. We will then head to OM yoga center (just 2 blocks south) where Margi Young will lead an open level class full of twists and hip openers, creating space for the upcoming feast, while focusing on keeping present and awake in each moment. And being present in the moment will also then be the theme at Maria's kitchen on 22nd street, where we will prepare and eat the food bought at the market in the morning. We will discuss the pleasures and benefits of eating from the local farmers' markets even throughout the winter, when there is a fraction of the produce available in the lush summer and fall months. You will leave this event with doggie bags and copies of all recipes.
Yesterday was a special Om yoga event. A large group of us went to the Union Square Farmer's Market with Margi Young and Maria Rosa Menocal to learn about local vendors, buy seasonal food, cook easy (yet versatile) dishes, and enjoy each other's company. As Maria said, the class was to be about, "ways of developing a practice where nourishment is rooted in an intimate and personal relationship with our food, one where the acts of buying it and making it are part of the process. Being present in the selection and preparation of food can be a deeply enriching part of our daily lives, and part of developing a consciousness about our relationship to the rest of the universe." It was a glorious day! I took notes so that we could remember all the fabulous tips Maria gave us, and how we shared a meal with each other, prepared a little something for others, many of us strangers. - Ellen T. Maria Rosa Menocal moved to the Union Square neighborhood a number of years ago to be able to buy, cook, and eat real food, from local sources, all year round. For over 30 years she has been an avid practitioner and teacher of the Alice Waters (and now Michael Pollan) approach to food as a core value in life, although she has also held a day job during these same years, as a medievalist. At Yale she is currently Sterling Professor of the Humanities and Margi Young once saw someone reading a copy of her last book (Ornament of the World) in a hot tub in Hawaii. Margi Young is a senior teacher at Om Yoga Center in NYC, where she teaches all levels of yoga and restorative yoga and is on the teacher-training faculty. She is delighted to offer this course as she is also an avid foodie and passionate about supporting local farmers, especially since the food from the market is so nourishing after a deep OM yoga practice.
