Many people have the idea that meditation is a blissful mental massage, like a bubble bath for the mind. People often have a similar notion about yoga, thinking of it as something that is very soothing and relaxing. They are sometimes disappointed to find out that doing yoga postures actually requires focus, muscular exertion, commitment to going beyond one's comfort zone, possibly even sweating! But if they stick it out they discover that the after-effect of their yoga practice is a wonderful sense of balance and well-being.

The same is true for meditation. Meditation is a process of developing skills for dealing with your whole life in a balanced, open hearted way. Learning Buddhist meditation helps us to see what is, as it is, rather than wishing things were different or trying to change our reality. This practice is sometimes called making friends with yourself. Rather than trying to attain a "higher" state, this simple technique cultivates our inherent stability, strength, clarity and openness which helps us to see what is, as it is, and more smoothly ride through the changes of our life.
