DESCRIPTIONS:
Friday:
7:00-10:00pm Standing on two legs: The Foot and Ankle
What challenges do we face as two-legged creatures balancing stability and mobility, and what can those challenges tell us about how we stay upright in tadasana and other standing asanas? While exploring the anatomy of the foot and ankle, we’ll examine how bones, connective tissue and muscle work to support us in gravity.
Saturday:
10:00-1:00PM Freely moveable joints: The Knee and Hip
How do joints allow movement while maintaining stability? Understanding the anatomy will help keep knees and other joints safe during yoga practice. We’ll look at the knee and hip as examples of synovial joints, and explore some of the muscles that cross them: the hamstrings, quadriceps and more.
Saturday: 2:30-5:30pm Posture: The Pelvis and Spine
How do we support the upper body on the lower? We’ll examine the structure of the spine, looking at the shapes of the vertebrae and the curves of the spine, and how they influence the spine’s ability to move in flexion, extension and rotation. We’ll continue our exploration of the hips, discussing how misalignment can distort the spine and create potential for injury.
Sunday:
9:00-12:00pm The Breath
How can we breathe with ease while maintaining support for the spine? We’ll look at how the abdomen and chest cavity interact, seeing the bandhas from a different perspective and revealing how they can support healthy breathing.Topics will include the ribcage, the diaphragm and accessory muscles of respiration, and the abdominal muscles.
Sunday: 1:00-4:00pm Weight Bearing in Asana: Arms and Shoulders
How do we use our arms and hands--better suited for mobility than stability--to support weight? How do we as bipeds become quadrupeds again in chaturanga and downward facing dog? We’ll look at the bones and muscles of the shoulder girdle to understand how healthy alignment helps keep shoulders safe.
